Pair of Antique Victorian Staffordshire Spaniel Dogs – c.1880
Pickup currently not available
A wonderful pair of antique Victorian Staffordshire spaniel dogs, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
Known as Wally Dogs, these impressive large Size 1 examples stand approximately 36 cm tall. Their cream-glazed bodies are decorated with hand-painted gold lustre stars, chains and lockets, finished with wonderfully expressive painted faces.
Made as traditional mantelpiece ornaments, they have characteristic flat backs, small firing holes and substantial press-moulded bases. Fine crazing, slight variations in the hand-painted decoration and natural wear to the bases are all consistent with their age and manufacture.
A particularly decorative pair, with great scale and presence.
