Antique Victorian Copper Haystack Pitcher – 1 Gallon – VR Stamped

£165.00

Late 19th-century Victorian copper haystack measure, holding 1 Imperial gallon.

Named for their distinctive conical shape, copper measures like this were traditionally used in English pubs, taverns, and kitchens to measure and dispense liquids—particularly ale, cider, and spirits. Used from the 18th century into the early 20th century, they were manufactured in a range of standardised capacities to comply with legal trade regulations.

This piece retains its original lead verification plug, stamped with a crown above 'VR' (Victoria Regina) and the number 6, proving it was officially inspected and verified in a specific local district during Queen Victoria's reign.

A great example of Victorian utilitarian copperware, with a rich patina acquired through age and use.

Dimensions: 27,5 × 30 × 23 cm

Capacity: 1 Imperial gallon (approx. 4.55 litres)

Material: Copper with lead verification plug

Condition: Very good antique condition with wear consistent with age and original use. The copper retains its natural patina, with surface marks, oxidation, colour variations, and areas of verdigris. There is a small bump/dent on the body. The original VR verification stamp remains clearly visible. Please refer to the photographs for details.
