Antique Napoleon III Match Holder — Chinoiserie Black Lacquer Papier-Mâché, 19th Century
Pickup currently not available
A special piece from Napoleon III period: a match holder (pyrogen) in lacquered papier-mâché, retaining its original striker on the base.
Finished in black lacquer with gilt chinoiserie decoration, the surface depicts stylised Asian-inspired figures and foliage — a reflection of the 19th-century French fascination for exotic motifs.
Small in scale but rich in detail, the piece carries a quiet decorative presence, where wear and patina soften the gilded surface and enhance its character.
Dating to the late 19th century, it now reads as a decorative curiosity rather than a functional object — ideal for a shelf, cabinet display, or layered composition.
